Tablets and pellet are the most common oral solid dosage forms. Tablets are cost-effectively prepared by a compression process. The granules are further processed by filling into capsules. Tablets are a flexible dosage form as only excipients can be changed to obtain immediate and extended release tablets. Both tablets and pellet can be coated for further functionalization.
In addition to tableting, L-HPC is also suitable for pellet extrusion. Micron grades are best for this application because the smaller particles pass easily through the screen. L-HPC provides a wet mass with a "buffer effect" where the wet mass accepts a wider range of water contents. L-HPC plasticizes wet mass and shows higher productivity (extrusion speed and output). The final granules showed rapid disintegration and better friability compared to non-L-HPC formulations.
